La Quinta is Luxury Oasis in California Desert

The chicken-and-egg question guests often ask at La Quinta Resort & Club is which came first: the city of La Quinta or the resort? The answer is neither. The Spaniards came first when they created a base in La Quinta along their route to the San Gabriel Mission.

Several centuries later, along came big shot Bay-area businessman Walter Morgan, who chose to build La Quinta resort pretty much where the Spaniards had their base. It was much later that the city of La Quinta was named for the resort — one of only two cities in the country to be named this way. The other is Beverly Hills, named after the famous Beverly Hills Resort.

The area Morgan chose for his resort is in the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains near Palm Springs and, today, La Quinta Resort & Club has become a massive 42-acre collection of casitas, golf courses, swimming pools and tennis courts that, for the first-timer, requires a roadmap to navigate. Charming Spanish architecture and abundant vegetation weave a colorful tapestry against the mountain backdrop, making La Quinta Resort & Club one of the prettiest spa resorts you’ll ever see. It’s the perfect choice for a California vacation of any length.

Our trip from San Diego to La Quinta was quick and easy using the back route through the parched landscape near Anza, culminating in a 10-mile winding, downgrade taking vehicles about 5,000 feet down to the desert floor where temperatures were nearly 20 degrees hotter than on top of the grade. Any trip to Palm Springs during the spring and summer requires a little pre-planning to manage the heat. You don’t just show up and stay on the golf course all day in triple-digit temperatures.

The locals in the Palm Springs area have learned to time outdoor activities so that they’re accomplished in the relatively cool mornings. In some cases, afternoon activities will work if you know, for example, your golf course will have shade. One of the La Quinta courses always gets covered in shade from the Santa Rosa Mountains at 3 p.m. each day.

“Managing the weather here is just a matter of keeping hydrated and wearing sunscreen,” explained Sara Harper, La Quinta’s Director of Marketing Communications. “And the nights here are so unbelievably pleasant.”

We hit an unusually hot weekend for spring — it got as high as 108 degrees — but we noticed that the heat really didn’t get uncomfortable until early to mid-afternoon. As they say, it’s a dry heat in the Palm Springs area, and the 90-degree temps in the morning hours felt downright refreshing.

But there is no question that your time at La Quinta Resort & Club — whatever the time of the year — is bound to involve some serious submerging in one of the resort’s 42 swimming pools. No, that’s not a typo — La Quinta not only has 42 pools, but 53 hot tub spas. Many of the resort’s casitas have their own swimming pools, but other casitas are grouped around one or more mid-size pools where there seemed to be plenty of room to swim and ample deck chairs to accommodate anyone who wanted to lay out in the desert sun.

Our “starlight” casita was a spacious upstairs unit in a two-story building overlooking one of the swimming pools. Floor plans at La Quinta offer more than the usual amount of space — 450 square feet or more — and that, along with the high ceilings, gives a feeling of openness. An incredibly comfortable king bed, hide-a-bed, desk and audio/video entertainment area were in the main room; the bath area was equally comfortable with an over-sized bathtub, walk-in shower stall, double vanities and a separate room for the commode.

Casitas each are decorated with a Southwestern flair. Mexican influenced pottery designs, wrought iron mirror frames and bed treatments with browns, reds and yellows created a fiesta of color in our casita’s main room. Outside on the deck were lounge chairs, a table and umbrella to enjoy the outdoors in total privacy.

The casita buildings are connected by a maze of walkways that will keep you reaching for your hotel map. These sidewalks also are a primary thoroughfare for the golf carts and bicycles driven and ridden by resort employees as they spread out all over the vast complex that totals 800 casitas altogether.

Back when Walter Morgan first built the resort in 1926, the resort plan was a bit more modest — only 20 casitas, although he did build the valley’s first golf course. La Quinta Resort was created to lure Hollywood stars to the Coachella Valley where they could get away from the studio and relax in privacy — which of course had something to do with why the Palm Springs area became popular with Hollywood movie stars.

At La Quinta, the list of Hollywood stars was impressive — such lminaries as Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Katherine Hepburn, Eddie Cantor and Shirley Temple were regulars. Greta Garbo had a house on the property, and Frank Capra wrote many of his movie scripts in the same La Quinta casita that today has his typewriter and one of his scripts awaiting the lucky guest renting that particular casita.

Hollywood stars still come to La Quinta today because, like many KSL Resorts properties, this resort is laid out in a campus style that allows a celebrity to avoid entering through a main entrance or elevator — the stars just drive right to their casitas, parking a few steps away and then get lost in the resort during their entire stay. This layout also is beneficial for everyday vacationers who don’t want to be bothered by convention and other group activities; when conventions are held at La Quinta they are held in areas where regular guests aren’t likely to even know they are there.

Sports celebrities, too, are in abundance — especially tennis players. La Quinta tennis pro Mike Casey has relationships with many world-class players who periodically will train at La Quinta. With 23 courts — clay, grass and hard surface — the resort has become popular also for ordinary people who just want to improve their tennis game. Many of the courts are lighted, which means the players can manage the Palm Springs heat by playing at night.

For golfers, La Quinta offers five courses, including three designated as PGA West.

For those of us who just want to relax and enjoy great food, La Quinta — as near as we could tell — fills the bill there, too. We only had time to sample the Adobe Grill — which served scrumptious and authentic Mexican cuisine — but the resort also boasts Morgan’s, a premium steakhouse, Azur by Le Bernadin seafood restaurant and the Spa Bistro, offering spa cuisine to make your stay as healthy as it was fun. Actually, including the golf courses, there are seven restaurants at La Quinta.

The Spa La Quinta is a top attraction at La Quinta — it offers guests many treatments created by the region’s first inhabitants. One of the top spa resorts in Southern California, this resort puts emphasis on outdoor spa treatments under the desert sky to add to the serenity and relaxation of the experience. Inside the spa facility, you’ll also find the Yamaguchi Salon, which is internationally known for cutting and coloring techniques that integrate Asian Feng Shui philosophy into these services. Those who enjoy spa vacations will enjoy La Quinta.

La Quinta Resort & Club has come a long way from the time in the 1500’s when it was the “fifth stop” on the way to San Gabriel Mission. Today it’s the first and only stop for many discriminating guests from around the world.

If you are looking to increase the “Wow” factor of your home or adding value to your property, the installation of a well-designed, modern luxury bathroom could be the perfect answer. The bathroom is one of the most important pieces at home; As a place of refuge and relaxation where you can spend time washing the concerns of daily life, so it is important to create a space that you like and where you can relax after a day’s work.

There are a number of ways to spruce up an old bathroom: by adding new features such as Whirlpool, walk-in showers and bidet, you can create a luxury whirlpool bathroom that will impress family, friends and potential buyers as well, as well as to reflect your personal taste.

luxury whirlpool baths – once found in high-class luxury hotel bathroom suites are now much more affordable for the owner everyday. They have grown rapidly in popularity due to their properties and relaxation hydrotherapy health benefits, which are well known to ease pain and distance. These baths can vary in size from large institutions tank holding several people, corner baths compact to which even the smallest bathrooms can accommodate – if anyone can install one.

Luxury showers are another way to add a touch of class to a bathroom or the value of your property. Why put up with a shower that offers little more than a net cold when you could get a shower which is the body massage jets with up to twelve? Or, why not install a shower with a steam system, FM radio and CD/MP3 player? Despite the high quality luxury nature of these showers, prices need not break the bank either.

If you think that much of the space is needed to install a bathroom luxury, think again. In fact, a number of suites to accommodate homes with limited space, offering compact corner baths and showers, as well as elegant sobriety toilets and basins – all with a high-quality finish. However, if the space is irrelevant, a roll top bath freestanding adds an air of elegance to your bathroom. There is a range of styles available, from the traditional model of double ended, slipper baths, boat baths and corner baths.

Installing a bathroom modern luxury eventually help you relax, add the class at home and increasing the value of your property-not to mention, give your guests to talk about something!

How To Have a Luxury Spa And Hotel Break For A Budget Price

August 22, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: spa bath set

Ever since Gok Wan went from making us look good naked to creating catwalk outfits for less than the price of dry cleaning a designer outfit, I’ve been pulling out my craft glue (and the occasional DIY supplies) to glam up New Look basics into must have “pieces”.   I’ve even taken a couple of their comfortable wide fit shoes and made them into sparkling triumphs courtesy of Claire’s Accessories and some Superdrug nail varnish.  I know, these are not names that generally inspire, but when the resulting sandals are mistaken for the latest season sandals from Dune (and are actually comfortable enough to walk in) I knew I was on to a winner.

Fast forward to a girlie weekend in Barcelona this March and a visit to a local spa and suddenly my mind was working overtime again.

As much as I love the idea of a long weekend at a luxury spa hotel, if I’m honest the prices have always put me off, and my recent experiences at day spas in Morocco and Barcelona have convinced me that you don’t need to pay through the nose for an exceptional spa experience.  In fact the best massages I have had to date have been the cheapest ones:

- Around £32 for a hammam, with a gommage “scrubbing”, followed by a rhassoul, and then the most relaxing massage I’ve ever had.  I can’t tell you how long I was in there – only that the sun had gone down, I had lost all track of time, and I was on a completely different planet.

- Even in Barcelona, with the euro at an all-time high, the top rated spa cost us around £54 for the hammam, (with extra hot steam room and plunge pool), followed by a gommage “scrubbing” and another extremely relaxing massage.  Three hours of luxury for £54 compared to UK prices is a total steal.

The fact is that in many cultures the local spa is an everyday (or at least every month) treat, which, combined with good exchange rates (when they are available), makes them a great bargain on holiday.  So why aren’t we taking advantage of them?  Well personally I think it’s because, whereas guide books are stuffed with restaurant, sight and hotel recommendations, very rarely do they spend any time on spas.  The spa in Morocco was recommended by friends, and the spa in Barcelona was found with some pre-emptive internet research.  Later in the year I’m off to visit China, which has some world class hotel spas, but also boasts a proud massage tradition, which leads me to hope that as well as the day spas I’ve been recommended (where prices are about a quarter of UK rates) I’ll also be able to find other more authentic bargains.

Which leads me to the hotel part of the spa and hotel break.  One of the reasons that staying at a luxury spa hotel can cost so much is that you are paying for the option to use it 24/7.  If, like me, you see your spa time as part of a whole trip rather than a destination in itself, you’ll probably find that one day spending 3-4 hours in a spa is enough (taking into account the detox effects) at least for a couple of days.  So just by choosing to stay in a separate hotel you will probably save a hefty chunk of your holiday budget, and you’ll also avoid the temptation to stay locked up in your hotel for your entire stay and miss out on the local treats.

By then choosing an affordable hotel, reasonably close to your spa, which features the required level of pampering (slippers, robe, fluffy white towels), you can relax back in your room safe in the knowledge that you’ll be going home with a designer glow and a budget bill.

Of course this is not to say that there aren’t spa hotels offering affordable deals, but by being flexible and savvy you can make sure that your relaxation time isn’t spent feeling ripped off.  And perhaps more importantly, by being more creative in choosing your hotel, you have a much better choice of spa.  You are not limited to an in-house spa experience, very important considering the number of excellent day spas available, even in the UK.  Take for example Spa London in Bethnal Green, voted 2010 Professional Beauty Awards “Day Spa of the Year”, where 3 hours of thermal experience will set you back £21.50 at the top of the scale for non-members, down to £6.75 for concessionary local members (including towel, robe and flip flop use) and which is truly a luxury experience compared to the slightly run down Porchester Spa.  And then there’s Thermae Bath Spa, the only place in the UK where you can bathe in natural healing spa waters, voted 2010 “Best Spa in the World” by readers of the Daily Telegraph’s Ultra Travel Magazine for the second time running, where a 2 hour session in the New Royal Bath (recommended) will set you back £24 (plus £9 hire cost for towel, robe and slippers if you need them – and you get to keep the slippers!)  Unlike many spas the Thermae Bath Spa also offers reductions for locals, disabled guests and their carers, so a local disabled guest (and carer) could pay as little as £9.50 each for a 2 hour session in the New Royal Bath.  (You can also buy a glass of spa water at The Pump Room for only 50p!)

Of course London and Bath are not known for their cheap hotel rooms, and certainly in central Bath you might be pushed to find availability, let alone an affordable room rate.  However, if you widen your search to the surrounding area, you’ll also find some wonderful B&Bs which would put many hotels to shame, and where you can wake up to the sound of a horse clip clopping past, right in the heart of the countryside.  Then it’s up to you whether you decide to explore some old fashioned villages, head back home refreshed and revived, or pop back to the Thermae Bath Spa for just a little more bargain relaxation.

Top 5 Luxury Spa Towns In Sicily

August 20, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: spa bath salts

Anyone who is interested in a luxury holiday to Italy will inevitably be drawn to the best spas and thermal baths the country has to offer. Since Roman times, spas have been one of the most popular forms of relaxation and socialising in Italy, and today its thermal baths and spas have become so popular that many holiday goers make them the centrepiece of their trip.

The best destinations for spa holidays in Italy are on the coast or the small islands that surround the mainland, and Sicily has some of the best thermal spa hotels in the region. Most of the top luxury hotels in Sicily have some kind of spa facility, and there are many that specialize in thermal treatments. Sicily and the Aeolian islands have numerous active and dormant volcanoes, and many spas take their spa water from natural hot springs. This volcanic spring water has a particularly high salt and mineral content, giving many health benefits to those who bathe in it.

Just as important as the quality of a luxury spa hotel in Sicily is its location. Some people want peace, quiet and natural beauty after a spa session, others want vibrant city life and an authentic taste of Sicilian culture as part of their holiday. Here are five of the best spa towns in Sicily, from bustling cities and towns to secluded island retreats.

Catania

Located on the east coast of Sicily, Catania is the island’s second largest city after Palermo. The source of Catania’s hot springs isn’t hard to locate – the city sits at the foot of the largest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna.

The proximity of the volcano has made the surrounding land extremely fertile, and the spring water is of excellent quality. Though earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have damaged the city at several points in its history, many of the ancient buildings remain intact. The city is also famed for its popular music scene, and so offers both handsome architecture and a vibrant nightlife. For people who want the bustle of an exciting city as part of their spa holiday in Sicily, Catania is an outstanding choice.

Vulcano

If you want a little more seclusion while on your luxury holiday in Sicily, some of the best places to go are on the Aeolian Islands, a small archipelago just off the north coast of Sicily. Each island has some superb spa resorts, but perhaps the best of them can be found on Vulcano.

As the name of the island suggests, several volcanoes are at the centre of the island, giving rise to the hot springs that are used by the spa hotels on Vulcano. The island is sparsely populated, leaving plenty of untouched natural beauty to enjoy between spa sessions. And for those who are looking for unusual health and beauty treatments, sulphur mud baths are a particular speciality offered by the spas of Vulcano.

Taormina

Taormina is small town on the east coast of Sicily, popular with tourists and famed for its superb beaches. The town itself is a great place to relax during spa holidays in Sicily, with picturesque architecture and a rich history. It’s an especially good place for culture vultures – Taormina features one of the most popular archaeological sites in Sicily, the ‘Greek Theatre’, a superbly preserved amphitheatre which is the venue for numerous live music and theatre events. For a luxury holiday in Sicily, Taormina is a great middle ground between a busy city like Catania and the more isolated Aeolian island resorts.

Mazara Del Vallo

Located in the southwest of Sicily, Mazara Del Vallo is a busy port town that is home to the largest fishing fleet in Italy. The area immediately around Mazara Del Vallo, where many of the best spa hotels are to be found, is rich with numerous olive groves and vineyards, providing a handsome backdrop to some of the best luxury resorts for holidays in Sicily. This part of the island is visited by fewer tourists than the north and east, which makes Mazara Del Vallo the ideal place to get away from the crowds for relaxing spa holidays in Sicily.

Termini Imerese

The very name of Termini Imerese is inseparable from its history as a spa town. Derived from the Latin “Thermae Himerenses” or “Hot springs of Himera”, the town has been a significant spa town since it was found over two and half thousand years ago. It has a history associated with the Hercules and the armies of Hannibal, and was once praised by Cicero as one of the finest towns in Sicily. Today, those on spa holidays in Sicily can still see the ancient Roman aqueducts and enjoy a superb view across the sea to nearby Palermo. Pretty architecture and good views aside, the town works hard to uphold its traditional role as a premier spa town. It has some of the best luxury hotels in Sicily, and most offer an extensive range of health and beauty treatments.

Enjoy The Luxury Of A Home Spa

August 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: spa bathtubs

Spas are indoor tubs that are filled with heated water. People will use these tubs for a number of reasons, and they are often prized for their therapeutic value. These tubs are excellent for those who want to relax, and by being located inside of the home, the owner doesn’t have to go outside to use them. The thing which makes these tubs different from traditional hot tubs is that they are located inside the home rather than outside. Using an outdoor hot tub presents a number of disadvantages. First, the use of the tub may be limited to certain weather conditions. For example, most people wouldn’t use an outside tub when it is raining, snowing, or during any type of bad weather.

The indoor tub has the advantage, because it can be used during anytime of the year, so long as the water is heated. Another thing that separates these indoor tubs from their outside counterparts is the way in which they are designed. More often than not, the indoor tub will be designed with plastic, and they will come in one piece, rather than parts. In order for the water to become hot, the tub must have some type of heating source. In traditional cases, this heating source would either be gas or electric. Heaters with wood fires would also be used to heat the tub.

Due to the rising cost of energy, many tub owners have opted for energy sources that are more affordable. Some tubs use solar energy as a method of heating the water. When you purchase your indoor tub, there are a number of things you will want to keep in mind. First, the tub must be regularly sanitized. As you use the tub, organisms and bacteria could be present in the water. It should also be noted that the indoor tub is not the same as a bathtub. The bathtub is used purely for cleaning ones body, while the indoor tub is used more for relaxation and entertainment purposes.

The exterior portion of the indoor tub is called the spa shell. The surface and interior area will be connected together when the tub is actually being constructed. The surface of the tub is the place where you will see the color, the look, and how the tub feels when you get in. This part of the tub must be designed in a manner which protects it against breaking down when exposed to the sun, or to the chemicals that will be used to clean it. If you purchase a high quality tub, the surface will often be made of materials that will make them resistant to stains, bacteria, and even sunlight.

An indoor tub can be designed in two ways, and this is the rotational molding method and the vacuum forming method. With the rotational method, polyethylene powder will be put on a mold of aluminum, and this mold will be heated and spun around within an oven to allow the plastic to take the same shape as the mold. With the vacuum forming method, a sheet will be put over a mold, and it will be heated with a heater overhead. A vacuum will also be pulled on top of the mold.
